Text size A A A. He was predeceased by his brother Robert and sister-in-law Ruth. He received a scholarship to attend the University of Alberta, where he graduated from Chemical Engineering. Dad and Mom married on May 5, They were the loves of each other's lives, and lived side-by-side for 67 years. Together, they were always supportive of their family and community.
Dad loved his job as a research scientist. During his 35 years with the NRC, he and his colleagues developed canola as an edible oil. He was instrumental in the introduction of pulse crops to Canada, and their milling and processing around the world. Clare and Alice travelled the world as he consulted in Asia, South America, and Europe on food production practices. Dad was always curious and loved to experiment and create.
After his retirement from the NRC, he sustained a keen interest in science, learning and theorizing about the cosmos, astrophysics, and the universe. He had a natural artistic ability, and loved to paint and draw. With each of his children and grandchildren, he embarked on many often ambitious building projects, and was always up for a challenge.
Most of all, we will remember Dad for his calm and kind presence. He took exceptional interest in others' lives and passions, listening and providing unconditional support for those around him. He loved to share stories and laughter with family and friends, and hosted many warm gatherings that we all remember fondly. Clare and Alice were founding members of St. Martin's United Church, and volunteered for many community organizations. After moving from their home on Wilson Crescent where they lived for over fifty years, Dad and Mom have been active members at Riverside Terrace and Trinity Manor, where they made great friends with community members and staff.
Dad touched the lives of many people who recognized him for his kindness and unassuming intelligence. He was bright and loving, and attentive to those around him until his final days. We will go forward with his example of how to live compassionately. Our family would especially like to thank Dr.
